What exactly are we about?
Get to Know Us
Our program is meticulously designed to provide aspiring equestrians who wish to get involved in the thoroughbred industry with a strong foundation and essential skills to excel in the racing industry.
We start with the fundamentals, teaching groundwork techniques, proper equipment application, and a basic understanding of lameness. As students advance, they can choose paths in pony riding, exercise riding, or foreman/assistant roles, each track ensuring they are well-prepared for a successful career while gaining confidence and control both off the racetrack so that it can be applied once on the racetrack.

We aim to ensure that each student has an understanding of their path choice, and the rules, regulations and expectations that are expected of each.

All About Me
My name is Marissa Short-Lopez. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, I moved to Kentucky in 2011 to follow my passion for horses at the University of Kentucky, to pursue a degree in Equine and Agriculture. Starting with little experience in thoroughbred racing, I dove into the industry in 2012, working my way up through hot walking, grooming, and galloping for smaller trainers. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside top trainers and even galloping horses in Dubai for the World Cup. With a decade of experience as an assistant trainer, including six years with Steve Asmussen, I recognized the urgent need for education and foundation in our industry, which inspired me to launch Iron Rose Academy.
